The Plastic Litter Project 2021 is an in situ validated data acquisition campaign of artificial floating marine litter (white HDPE mesh) and natural debris (wooden planks) targets. Each target has an approximate surface area of 600 m2, and is deployed in the Gulf of Gera, in the Island of Lesvos, in Greece (plp.aegean.gr). The targets were deployed for a 4-month period, spanning from 2021-06-16 to 2021-10-04.

TISPLALI

This dataset contains hundreds of marine litter observations (windrows, buoys and other floating objects) for 24/03/2021 in the Northern Adriatic Sea (Po Delta). Observations were extracted from WorldView-2 panchromatic WV-2 images with 50-cm spatial resolution. The original dataset from _Remote Sensing Solutions GmbH_ also contains hundreds of image chips (256x256 pixels) for the same observations, each composed of 8 spectral bands and with a pixel resolution of 1.6 m.

Adriatic Sea debris observations (WorldView-2)

The dataset comprises bounding boxes of 23 aquafarms in the Mediterranean Sea. We assume that from a satellite perspective the signal received from them is very similar to the signal of ghost nets. Thus, we are using satellite images of these locations to train a CNN for ghost net detection in the project TRACE. Most of these aquafarms are in place since many years. Thus, you can download images such as Sentinel-2 covering a large time span, different states of weather and sea. The farms are stable in there position, however, they can move a few meters depending on the wind direction and currents.

The objective of the MARLISAT project was to further develop Marine Plastic Monitoring through satellite technologies, i.e., using satellites to detect Marine litter, track it and forecast its pathways. The project was led by CLS, with Pixalytics developing the remote sensing-based detection approach. It was funded through the European Space Agency, contract number 4000131481/20/NL/GLC. Accumulation of debris due to extreme events reported by TV news (Visegrad) or local institutions (Mallorca). The patches were then located visually on optical and SAR satellite images on the dates and area reported.

MARIDA is the first dataset based on the multispectral Sentinel-2 (S2) satellite data, 
which distinguishes Marine Debris from various marine features that co-exist, including Sargassum 
macroalgae, Ships, Natural Organic Material, Waves, Wakes, Foam, dissimilar water 
types (i.e., Clear, Turbid Water, Sediment-Laden Water, Shallow Water), and Clouds. 
We provide annotations (georeferenced polygons/ pixels) from verified plastic debris 
events in several geographical regions globally, during different seasons, years and 
sea state conditions.

Litter, plastics in particular, is accumulating in our seas and coasts. Information and data on marine litter is essential for tackling it. The European Environment Agency has developed Marine LitterWatch to strengthen Europe’s knowledge base and thus provide support to European policy making.

Ghost gear refers to any fishing gear that has been abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded, and is the most harmful form of marine debris.

There are many reasons why fishing gear can be lost or abandoned, including severe weather, snags beneath the surface, conflict with other gear, interaction with other vessels and, rarely, intentional discard when no other options are available.
